Logistics,originally,originated in the military's need to supply themselves with arms, ammunition and rations as they moved from their base to a forward position,has now a taken a wider aspect.Logistics,now,is not just the transport of goods(for instance,through courier or transport services) but the management of flow of resources between the point of origin and the point of destination, in order to meet the requirements of customers or corporations. Logistics may involve the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material handling, and packaging, and even
security.It may vary from consumer items such as food to IT materials.

Logistics find its importance and use in various fields.The fields may include:

• Business Logistics - The science of planning, design, and support of business operations of procurement, purchasing, inventory, warehousing, distribution, transportation, customer support, financial and human resources. (As given by: MDC, LogLink / LogisticsWorld, 1997)

• Acquisition Logistics - Acquisition Logistics is everything involved in acquiring logistics support equipment and personnel for a new weapons system.

• Procurement Logistics - In most manufacturing or distribution companies, procurement logistics form the backbone of the company as it accounts for minimizing costs and increasing services. Procurement logistics are the processes used in the delivery, receipt, movement and storage of materials purchased for a business or organization.

• Production Logistics - The main function of production logistics is to use the available production capacities to produce the products needed in distribution logistics. 

• Distribution Logistics -- It involves the delivery of the finished products to the customer. It consists of order processing, warehousing, and transportation.
